Put the War Profiteers on the Defensive

Help Us Buy a Full-Page Politico Ad to Fight War Industry Influence on Capitol Hill!

Next Tuesday, military contractors plan to stage a "march to the Hill" to pressure Congress to protect their massive revenues from cuts by the new deficit committee and cash in on contractor contributions to committee members. We need your help to fight their influence.

Please donate today to help us put them on the defensive by buying a full-page newspaper ad in Politico the day before their “march.”

Empire

The U.S. has more than 1,000 military bases worldwide and conducts military operations in 120 or more countries. More people serve in military bands than the total number foreign service officers serving in the State Department. Learn more.

War profiteers escalate their war on jobs--fight back!

The deficit committee meets on Tuesday, and military contractors are marching on the Hill to influence, intimidate, or buy its members. We’re launching War Costs’ fight-back in D.C. with a full-page ad in Politico targeting committee members, along with a new video to let people know what’s really going on. Please help maximize our impact:

1. Share our video with your friends, and

2. Call committee co-chairs Sen. Patty Murray (202.224.2621) and U.S. Rep. Jeb Hensarling (202.225.3484). Tell them firmly (but politely) that war spending costs us jobs, and we expect them to cut the war budget despite Second To None’s pressure campaign.

Media Lapdogs

The war industry and their government allies have willing collaborators among the major media outlets in the U.S. News shows allow pundits to argue for more war spending without noting they have a financial interest in such spending. Learn more.

Patriots

War Costs tells the story of people who blew the whistle on misconduct, and the people working to chart a better course for our country. Learn more.

Northrop Grumman and Boeing Spent a Ton of Your Money To Try to Avoid Paying Taxes. It Worked.

By
Published: Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

We’ve been following the insane amount of our tax dollars that war industry companies use to lobby our Congress out from under us for a while, but the new Sunlight Foundation report just puts a cherry on top of this Tax Day. They’ve just published a report showing that the top eight companies spending the [...]

Not making enough as a Goldman Sachs CEO? Become a war profiteer instead.

By
Published: Saturday, April 14th, 2012

The New York Times reports that Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein made $12 million last year, despite some ugly, but not illegal, behavior. Poor schmuck. He’s only making half what Lockheed Martin CEO Robert Stevens made last year. Lockheed Martin is the largest Pentagon contractor, getting 82 percent of its 2011 funds from the taxpayer. [...]

For the first time, most Republicans say Afghanistan War not worth fighting

By
Published: Thursday, April 12th, 2012

In the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll, Republicans and Democrats both say the war isn’t worth fighting. It’s past time for President Obama to get our troops out of there. It’s not making us safer, and it’s not worth the costs.

Don’t Freak Out, But the Pentagon Just Took a Baby Step in the Right Direction on Military Pork

By
Published: Thursday, April 12th, 2012

It’s not every day we get to write a headline like this, so we’ll just get right to it: The Pentagon has ended their annual ritual of porking up the final military budget through their list of “unfunded priorities.” See, usually, the Pentagon writes up a budget that conforms to the President’s overall request, but [...]

Pentagon Admits U.S./Afghan Night Raid Deal Is a Joke

By
Published: Thursday, April 12th, 2012

The U.S. is publicly describing the deal with the Karzai administration on night raids as a big deal, but Pentagon spokespeople are crystal clear that the deal doesn’t give any new recognition to the right of Afghans to control their own affairs. From Stars and Stripes: “This is not about [giving Afghan officials] a veto [...]

Sorry’s Not Good Enough in Afghanistan. Here’s Why

By
Published: Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

As violence continues following the burning of Qurans by ISAF in Afghanistan, insiders in Washington, D.C. and in the media are wasting quite a bit of breath asking the rhetorical question, “Why aren’t the apologies working?” Military commanders in Afghanistan apologized profusely, President Obama exposed himself to the demagoguery of Republican primary opponents with his [...]

No More “King-Washing” the Pentagon, Please

By

“A true revolution of values will lay hand on the world order and say of war, “This way of settling differences is not just.” This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation’s homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into the veins of peoples normally humane, of [...]

The Devil Is in the Details of the Pentagon’s Plan

By
Published: Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Will super-rich war-industry CEOs be able to keep bilking taxpayers out of hundreds of billions of dollars? That’s the question everyone should be asking after today’s announcement of the new strategic guidelines for the Pentagon. With the new guidance promising only to slow — not reverse — the growth of the bloated military budget, there’s [...]

War Industry’s Accountants Can’t Count

By
Published: Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

The war profiteers’ shady lobbying campaign took another hit to its credibility today, as an accounting firm on which they relied to support their bogus “military spending = jobs” argument was cited for severe audit deficiencies. As our new War Costs short video shows, the war industry’s Second To None lobbying effort specifically cited numbers [...]
